What is the impact of loading time on the bounce rate?

In January 2017, Google conducted a study on the loading time of a web page on mobile. More than 900,000 websites in 126 countries were analyzed using an Android emulator (Nexus 5).
This survey shows that after 3 seconds of waiting, more than half of mobile users (53%) leave a page if it is not fully loaded.
What is paradoxical is that the study specifies that the average loading time of a mobile page is currently 22 seconds ... Moreover, for 70% of the pages analyzed, the visual content above the zone of floatation is displayed in 7 seconds. It takes another 10 seconds to load it in full.
The elements that influence the loading time
The study specifies that the loading time varies according to the size of the page. 70% of the pages studied by Google weighed more than 1 MB, among which: 36% more than 2 MB and 12% more than 4 MB. Which is much too much? You should know that a page of 1.4 MB, on mobile, is loaded in about 7 seconds. According to the data cited above, this means that these pages increase by 106% their bounce rate.
To overcome this problem, it is essential to compress the size of the images, which some sectors of activity such as automotive or new technologies have understood.
Google shows that if 30% of the pages analyzed were devoted to this good practice, they would save 250KB of load. Precious seconds that would reduce the bounce rate!

The search engine recalls that to provide smooth and fast mobile browsing, companies must create a site “mobile first “. In other words: a site entirely designed to display on smartphone and tablet.
